Gardens In the Square by Roberta Rettew Iula

Good Morning. On this cold February day I post warm colors of summer to come.
Pictured is a small section of my work, Field of Sunflowers. I recently framed this
and it is ready for show time at Brath & Hughes Fine Arts Gallery. I made a visit to
the gallery a few weeks ago, and it was exciting and helpful to view the wall where
my art will be on view.
Gardens In the Square show will take place in May, 2013.

Orris House Inn is a drawing of my Urban Oasis Series.  Busy street, miles of houses close together,
small frontage properties. Your attention is drawn to this section due to beautiful example of
Second Empire Victorian architecture- which is presented not just singularly but with double placement
charm..... the existing established classic landscape unifies this site and drawing. Large old deciduous
and conifer mixed with broad leaf evergreen, shrubs and perennials makes this "back in time, charm feeling"
more believable. Add the architectural element of wrought iron fence and gate and the setting gets rather
perfect. I will be making further studies of these properties.   SOLD

Ronde de Bordeaux Fig by Roberta Rettew Iula

I know. Long title for a tiny fig. This past summer I was rooting various varieties of fig cuttings. I got to thinking about Nick's parents and their fig tree in Boston, Ma. I was so disappointed in my mind that I can't ask them anymore.... What variety of fig did you have? They were so good to eat. I began to get that feeling of I'm going to paint some figs!!! They have to be of the red flesh variety! I was also aware that I wanted to be factual, authentic as to the skin color and leaf shape. Fig leaves share many differences. Ronde de Bordeaux Fig represents my thoughts on the energy of growth, cells, skin, sunlight and sky coming through. The final product-you eat! and they are yummy excellent.
Ronde de Bordeaux Fig has been accepted at Brath & Hughes Fine Arts Gallery for the Food and Fruit Show!!! I am most happy about that!  Opening is Friday, February 1st.

Art On the Farm...By Roberta Rettew Iula

A day well spent. Art On the Farm at Dickinson College Farm presented a wonderful blend of weather, sharing, meeting and greeting, plein air painting, delicious food and drink and friendship. It also made you so aware -or reminded you- of what happens on a farm, all the work, and the exchange that is offered to a community.
I really enjoyed looking for the spot that I wanted to be painting. You know, you almost always just see okra on your plate- fried up or some other scrumptious presentation. I parked myself right in the middle of the okra and tomato rows. Loved it!
Okra is of the Mallow Family- Malvaceae- and is related to the Hibiscus, cotton and cacao. No wonder I was taken in with the hibiscus type floral bloom, large leaf pattern and stature of the plant.
The title of my work is OKRA.  The medium used is soft pastel. My technique was both wet and dry applications.
Stage 2.  About 1/2 finished

Looking out from the rows of okra and tomatoes. Weather was perfect.

Thinking Back to Florida...By Roberta Rettew Iula

After completing The Barn/Silo Series, I knew I wanted a big change in the palette for my next painting. Azo Yellow Medium and Cadmium Yellow Deep. This color range was on my mind constantly. I also knew that I wanted to begin working with square canvases.

The colors that I laid out for myself led me to the citrus theme, and in turn I began to think back to Florida living. Southern Florida in the mid to late 90's.  I always felt that when driving across the state lines into Florida - it seemed like entering a vast space outside of the U.S.  Brand new territory, yet really old at the same time.

SUNSPLASH is about warmth, sun, weather, afternoon rains, citrus groves, being buoyant and healthy, sun drenched.
